The $999 laptop that built my business

My first laptop was a Dell Latitude. A gift from my dad in 2018. I was 16, and it felt like a big deal.

Two years later, it died. Of course it did.

I needed a replacement and I didn't have much. So I took the money I'd saved and bought the cheapest Mac that made sense: a 2020 MacBook Air with an i3 processor. Not the fast one. Not the pretty one. The budget one.

That laptop built my career.

Three jobs and a business

It got me through my first three jobs. Then it got me through the hardest part: starting my own business from scratch.

Late-night client projects. Early-morning emails. Proposals written at midnight. Campaigns launched from a kitchen table. Every early win at Rope Digital went through that one machine. So did every mistake.

Was it powerful? No. Did it matter? Not really.

The tool doesn't make you. It just can't stop you.

Here's what nobody tells you when you're starting out. You don't need the best gear. You need gear that works and doesn't get in your way.

That i3 MacBook Air never once stopped me from doing the work. It handled a growing business, more clients, more tabs, more tools, and it kept going. Years after I bought it, I was still using it every day.

Too many people wait for the perfect setup before they start. The new laptop. The fancy desk. The premium software subscription. Case in point: none of that built my business. A budget laptop and a lot of hours did.

Now? An M4.

I finally upgraded. I'm now on an M4 MacBook, and it's the most powerful machine I've ever used. Things that used to take minutes take seconds. Heavy design files, dozens of tabs, AI tools running side by side. It doesn't flinch.

Do I love it? Yes.

But I earned it. The business paid for it, because the cheap laptop did its job first.

So what should you buy?

Buy what you can afford today. Start working tonight. Upgrade when the work, not your ego, demands it.

The best tool is the one you actually use. Mine just happened to cost less than everyone thought it should.
