DE Rantau Nomad Pass: Malaysia's digital nomad visa, explained by a pass holder
I live in Kuala Lumpur on the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, and I run NomadsVisa, which gets applicants through it every week. This is the part that doesn't go out of date: who it's for, the documents, how to prove your income and the mistakes that cause delays.
Five layers every application needs.
Work from the portal's exact list. Thinking in layers helps you spot a gap before an officer does. Every document should answer one question cleanly.
Identity
Passport biodata page with enough validity, any previous passport your travel history spans, and a photo that meets the stated specification.
Status and contact
Proof of current address and an email address you'll still control months from now.
Work relationship
Contracts, engagement letters, an employment letter or company registration, depending on how you work.
Income evidence
Bank statements and, where relevant, invoices and tax filings covering a continuous recent period.
Supporting assurances
Insurance and any other documents the programme currently asks for. Always check the live list.
How to prove remote income, by profile.
It's an income-source test, not a job offer. No Malaysian employer sponsors you, so your evidence has to show a living, not a single payslip.
Freelancers and contractors
Build a chain a stranger can follow: contract, invoices under it, and bank credits matching those invoices. If platform fees or currency conversion change the amounts, add a one-page reconciliation.
Remote employees
Get a signed letter on letterhead confirming your role, pay and, critically, that your employer permits you to work from outside your home country. Many letters leave that out.
Company owners
Show the company is real and trading, and how money moves from the company to you. Registration documents plus the trail of what you're actually paid.
The mistakes that cause most delays.
Names that don't match
Passport, bank, contracts and tax records spelling your name differently. The single most common cause of delays.
Income you know but can't prove
Legal, real earnings paid in ways that aren't documented in a form an officer accepts.
Quoting old numbers
Relying on a blog's income threshold or fee. Thresholds, fees and lists change. The official portal is the only source of truth.
DE Rantau questions, answered.
What is the DE Rantau Nomad Pass?
The DE Rantau Nomad Pass is Malaysia's digital nomad visa. It's run under the DE Rantau programme administered by MDEC, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, and lets approved remote workers live in Malaysia legally while earning from clients or employers outside the country.
Does Malaysia have a digital nomad visa?
Yes. Malaysia's digital nomad visa is the DE Rantau Nomad Pass, applied for through MDEC's official DE Rantau portal at mdec.my/derantau.
Who is eligible for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass?
Remote workers whose income comes from outside Malaysia: freelancers, remote employees and company owners in the eligible professional categories, from accepted nationalities, who can prove a minimum income. The eligible professions, nationalities and income threshold are set by MDEC and change from time to time, so check the current requirements on the official portal before you apply.
What are the requirements for the Malaysia digital nomad visa?
Broadly: a valid passport, proof of a remote work relationship (contracts, an employment letter or company registration), proof of income meeting the current threshold, and supporting documents such as insurance. The exact list, income figure and fees are published on the official DE Rantau portal and you should work from that.
How do I prove remote income for DE Rantau?
Make the evidence easy to follow. Freelancers should link contracts, invoices and matching bank credits. Remote employees need an employer letter that explicitly permits working from abroad. Company owners should show the company trading and how they're paid from it. Where amounts differ because of fees or currency conversion, add a short reconciliation.
Why do DE Rantau applications get delayed or refused?
Rarely because the person didn't qualify. Usually because the paperwork was thin, inconsistent, or didn't tell a story that held together: mismatched names, unproven income, missing employer permission, or out-of-date requirements.
Can I apply for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass from outside Malaysia?
Yes, applicants anywhere in the world can apply through the official portal, subject to the current nationality list. I signed a one-year lease in Kuala Lumpur before I'd ever set foot here, and the free guide covers how to choose an apartment from abroad.
Should I use an agent to apply?
Not necessarily. If your income evidence is clean and your situation is simple, you can apply yourself. It's worth paying for help when your income comes from several sources, your names don't match across documents, or you've had a previous refusal. I run NomadsVisa, which handles applications end to end.
