Fractional CMO services for startups and growing businesses

A senior marketing leader inside your team, one or two days a week. I build the growth engine with you: positioning, channels, numbers and the people to run it. Not a deck. A working function.

01When to hire one

Six signs you need a fractional CMO.

If two or more of these sound familiar, the problem usually isn't effort. It's that nobody senior owns growth.

Growth has stalled

What got you to the first customers has stopped working, and nobody can say exactly why.

Marketing is a list of tactics

Ads, posts, an agency, a newsletter. Lots of activity, no single engine you can measure.

You can't justify a full-time CMO

You need senior judgement now, but not a full-time executive salary or a six-month hiring search.

Founder-led sales is maxed out

The founder is still the whole go-to-market motion, and it doesn't scale past their calendar.

Nobody owns the numbers

You can't say what a customer costs to acquire, which channel pays back, or where the funnel leaks.

You've just raised

Fresh capital and a growth target, but no plan for turning spend into predictable pipeline.

02How it works

The first six months, step by step.

One to two days a week, inside your standups, for three to six months. Here's the shape of a typical engagement.

Weeks 1–2: Diagnose

Interviews with customers and the team, a channel and funnel audit, and a clear read of what's working, what isn't and why.

Weeks 3–6: Build the engine

Positioning, ideal customer profile, the three to five channels worth running, one growth metric and a weekly scorecard.

Weeks 7–12: Run and tune

Test cadence, kill or rebuild the weakest channel each month, and get the reporting into a rhythm the team owns.

Months 4–6: Hand over

Hire or train the people who keep it running. You keep a working function, not a deck.

04Questions

Fractional CMO questions, answered.

What is a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who works part-time inside your business, typically one or two days a week, and owns marketing strategy and execution the way a full-time Chief Marketing Officer would. You get executive-level judgement without the cost and commitment of a full-time hire.

What does a fractional CMO actually do?

Diagnoses why growth has stalled, sets positioning and the ideal customer profile, chooses and runs the channels worth running, builds the reporting, manages agencies and freelancers, and hires or trains the team that keeps it going. In my engagements I sit in your standups and build the artefacts myself rather than reporting from the outside.

How much does a fractional CMO cost?

It depends on scope and days per week. I price by engagement and quote after a 20-minute fit call, once I know what needs building. As a rule of thumb, a fractional CMO costs a fraction of a full-time CMO's total package and starts in weeks rather than after a months-long search.

When should a startup hire a fractional CMO?

When growth depends on marketing but you can't yet justify a full-time executive: after product-market fit signals, after a raise with a growth target, when founder-led sales stops scaling, or when you're spending on marketing without knowing what pays back.

Fractional CMO or marketing agency: which do I need?

An agency executes a scope you give it. A fractional CMO decides what the scope should be, holds agencies and freelancers accountable, and owns the result. Many businesses need both; the fractional CMO makes sure the agency spend goes where it actually moves a number.

How long does a fractional CMO engagement last?

Usually three to six months at one to two days a week. That's long enough to diagnose, build the growth engine, run it, and hand it over to a team that keeps it going.

Do you work remotely and across time zones?

Yes. I run Rope Digital, a global digital agency based in Delaware (USA), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Colombo (Sri Lanka), with clients in more than 40 countries, and I work remotely as a digital nomad based in Malaysia. Engagements run on video calls, async updates and your team's own tools.

Can you be a fractional CMO and CTO at the same time?

Sometimes the growth problem is really a product, data or AI problem. I offer fractional CTO engagements too, and some clients use both. We decide which one you need on the fit call.

Need a CMO, but not full-time?

Send a short note or book a 20-minute fit call. We diagnose, we don't pitch, and I'll come back within 48 hours with a yes, a no, or a better introduction.
